VANCOUVER, B.C. Professional level character animation, using keyframing and motion capture data, can now be created quickly and inexpensively with Life Forms™ V2.1. Life Forms™ is a fast and easy-to-learn 3D tool designed as a niche product for the animation, planning and playback of human movement. With its import/export plug-ins, BioVision and VRML1&2 included, Life Forms™ complements other 3D modelling, animation and rendering programs to offer a unique character animation solution to animators, game developers and the wide range of new 3D users. The VRML1&2 plug-ins also enable web designers to easily add animated 3D characters to VRML environments. For example, the Life Forms™ walk generator can create 3D walking figures for the web in seconds! Life Forms™ V2.1 Mac and Windows ships June 15.

“Character animation, particularly for realistic human movement, is an extremely difficult task.” says Dr. Tom Calvert, CEO of Credo Interactive Inc. and a pioneer in human figure animation research. “Without compromising creativity, Life Forms™ has become a key tool in the professional animator’s tool set by simplifying the task and reducing production costs. The BioVision and VRML1&2 plug-ins give access to more users of 3D animation programs such as ElectricImage, and to web designers. The BioVision plug-in also opens exciting possibilities for modifying motion capture data sets and integration with keyframe data within the Life Forms™ tool.”

With an interface designed for re-use, Life Forms™ empowers users to create, modify and finalize complex animation of multiple characters with minimal effort and costs. The new plug-ins export animation data to a wide range of general 3D packages such as 3D Studio, Infini-D, Extreme3D, SoftImage, ElectricImage, Alias and any program that imports BioVision or VRML 2.0 animation data formats. The direct support of entry-level 3D programs makes an exciting, professional tool accessible to those users in multimedia who are just starting in 3D character animation. The diverse Life Forms™ user base includes animators, game developers, choreographers, film writers, directors, multimedia creators, architects, medical specialists and educators.

“Life Forms V2.1 has combined an easy to use interface with enormous functionality in producing an entirely unique product on the Windows, Macintosh and SGI platforms.” states forensic animator David Saraceno, Attorney and Principal at DigitaLAW Inc. “I do a great amount of inverse kinematics work in Electric Image. The BioVision export feature in Life Forms V2.1 creates realistic human movement for use in Electric Image with a minimum of effort. Life Forms is reasonably priced, ships with a comprehensive manual, and is responsive to its user base -- a nice package in today's software world.”

Life Forms and 3D graphics is being applied to many new applications by companies in multimedia, entertainment, business, education and the arts. For example, DigitaLAW is a consulting company that produces animation sequences, digital video, and trial graphics for use by attorneys and other professionals in the forensic animation area. Life Forms 1.0 was used for pre-viz work in the film production of Jurassic Park and Terminator. Life Forms is used internationally by choreographers including Merce Cunningham, the Father of Modern Dance. Users in other fields are quickly discovering that Life Forms' innovative features can enhance their work process and quality.
